My First Eid Al Fitr in Singkawang

After postponing our mudik trip last year, finally I got to celebrate this year's Eid Al Fitr with my husband's family in his hometown, Singkawang, West Kalimantan, Indonesia. This was my first time to celebrate Eid with his family, and I was so stoked to have my family joining us! Me and my husband left around a week before Eid, while my parents and my sister left a day before Eid. My husband and I would be stay in Singkawang for two weeks, so I had to make sure that we left the house in a proper condition.

My biggest concern with leaving the house for a quite long time was my plants, because they needed to be watered everyday and fertilized once a week. So, I put the slow-release fertilizers and made a DIY self watering system to provide their needs while we were away.

I also cleaned up the whole house, collected all the waste and contacted waste management provider to pick up my recyclable waste so we could come back to a clean house later.

We reached Singkawang at night and stayed at hotel for a night as we needed a really good sleep before we cleaned my in law's house and prepared everything for the Eid. On the next day, we moved to their house and started to do all the works. Sadly I didn't take a lot of pictures and we barely went anywhere as we were like really really busy to make sure everything was ready for the Eid celebration.

On the last Ramadan or a day before the Eid, me and my husband went to Pontianak to pick my family up and to shop other things that weren't available in Singkawang. We also spent a little time that we had in Pontianak to explore in a bit. We visited Equator monument and Kapuas river, and had the famous ice cream, Es Krim Angi. I know I said it was the last Ramadan day, but no one was fasting because it was a really long day (sigh).

After we arrived back in Singkawang, we went straight for dinner at Agus' favorite thai restaurant and we drove around town to enjoy malam takbir or night parade where people cheering and singing to praise The Lord on their decorated cars. It's been awhile I haven't had a festive malam takbir as I usually just stayed at home.

The next morning, we woke up early to pray Eid salah at Masjid Raya Singkawang. Too bad I was on my period so I couldn't join the prayer :( Instead, I helped my mother in law to prepare the house to welcome all the guests. When everyone was done with the prayer we gathered together to ask for forgiveness and forgive each other. As it was also my father's 70th birthday so we surprised him with a lapis legit cake. I was sooo happy to have everyone spent that special day together except my brother and my sister who were celebrating the Eid in Jakarta.

I was also happy that everything was served as planned, even though I wasn't the one who cooked. For the main course we got lontong, opor, rendang, sate ayam, sambal goreng ati and paru cabe ijo. We also got the cakes: lapis legit and other traditional cake. The cookies: nastar, kastengel, putri salju, and kue sagu, plus other snacks and crackers, and various canned drink plus mineral water. Yummm!

After finishing our meals, we went to the famous choipan shop at Sakok, and visit my in law's farm where she plants lotsssss of pepper. I took a lot of pictures in the garden as I wore my new lebaran attire after many years re-wearing my old lebaran clothes.

On the second day we were going to my in law's village at Sabing, Sambas. It took 3 hours from Singkawang but it didn't feel like so as we enjoyed the view along the way. Besides meeting the big family, I got the chance to try honey straight from the hive, harvested orange from the tree and watched fireflies that I haven't seen in a long time!

We didn't stay at Sabing because my family went home on the next day. Before they went, we had a breakfast together at a legend porridge shop in Singkawang and enjoyed the city activities in the morning. Sadly, I couldn't drop them to the Pontianak airport because I got sick, so my husband went by himself. After all the works and the travels, me and my husband got sick and took a bed rest for about 4 days. We had to cancel our trip to Malaysia and just spent our last days to visit places that we haven't had a chance to visit in Singkawang.
